Augustenstrasse Munich

New development of a condominium complex with underground car park and landscaped courtyard
1999 - 2002

Client: Franziskaner Haus- und Gewerbebau GmbH, Munich
Architects: Architekten HBH, Hilzinger, Bittcher-Zeitz, Habisreutinger, Munich

The residential building with 17 living units, shop and underground car park is situated in a bustling residential and commercial street in an area of Munich known as „Maxvorstadt“.
The green inner courtyard, encased on all sides by either multi-storey buildings or perimeter walls, faces east-west and largely covers an underground car park. There is a diagonal footpath through the courtyard linking up with the cycle and rubbish enclosures, and providing access to the play ground and rear building. The latter is given privacy by means of a bamboo grove and the private gardens looking towards the west. A grove-like beech hedge marks the horizon at body height, whilst birch trees in casually arranged vegetation clusters contrast with the built-up perimeter edges.
